Open Stacks

In our Library, users have free access to books and serials located in open stacks. Holdings are divided by subject area, according to the Library of Congress Classification schedule. In this part you can find most books published after 1980, along with others, which are important to particular branches of knowledge. Holdings also include frequently used serials (placed in alphabetical order in the specific subject area). Holdings are divided into eight subject areas, on the first and second levels.

On the first level you can find books and serials from the following areas:
language and literature: P;
philosophy, psychology, religion, and education: B L;
history: AM C D-F GN 700-875;
geography, mathematics, natural and applied sciences: G-GF Q R-V.

On the second level you can find:
law and political science: K J;
social sciences, including anthropology: H GN1-673 GR-GV;
music, architecture, and fine arts: M N,
In the Reading Room you will find general works and library science materials: A Z.

In open stacks you can take a book from the shelf without filling out a requisition form, but please do not return it to the shelf. Items are marked with colored labels: red means that you may use a book only within library; blue means that you may check it out. Alphanumeric call numbers (letter and number combinations) are specific to each item, and begin with the subject area symbol. For example, a book with the call number:

DS59 K86 M44 1997

Author: Meiselas, Susan
Title: Kurdistan. In the Shadow of History
belongs to the history of Asia (DS) and to the overall subject area "History" (AM C D-F GN700-875).

For items from closed stacks, you must fill out a proper requisition form at the Circulation Desk or the Reading Room. For books with records in the online catalogue, you may also make direct requests from the catalogue (also through Internet).
